The Chieftains had a great tournament down in San Diego in May. We sent 5 teams to the competition which made us the largest contingent of all the visiting teams.
Both mens football teams and the hurling team competed strongly picking up wins on the 1st day where the schedule placed heavy demands on our dual players who put in some tough shifts.
The ladies had a storming first day, winning all games in both codes with some players playing their first ever games in football and camogie.
Day 2 saw some schedule changes but when the hurlers got going they produced the game of the tournament going down narrowly to eventual winners San Francisco's Naomh Padraig, a side carrying a number of inter-county players. Epic performances from keeper Eoghan Greene, captain James Gunning and forward Niall McCormack saw the Chieftains come within a score of the pre-tournament hot favourite.
The ladies continued from Day 1's successes, obviously benefitting from the previous nights restraints. They came out on top against a strong Seattle camogie outfit but had to limit their celebrations as they went into a football final against a San Diego outfit that had provided a stern test the previous day. A stout defence kept San Diego scoreless for the entire game and the ladies lifted their 2nd trophy of the day.
A further highlight of the weekend saw an exhibition co-ed football match between Ireland and N.America, the Chieftains had 4 representatives on the field and a tough encounter saw Ireland emerge narrow victors.
